Hello! I’m back from WSSC 2012, re-energized more committed than ever to Spinningâ . For those of you who don’t know, WSSC is the World Spinning and Sports Conference sponsored by Mad Dogg Athletics, Inc (the creators of Spinningâ.) Every year, hundreds of passionate instructors gather in Miami for a 3-4 day conference full of workshops and classes taught by rockstar Master Instructors. Basically, it’s camp for adults. We work hard, reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and more importantly surround ourselves with positivity and an energy that resonates far beyond the plane ride that takes you back home.
This was my third year at WSSC and each year I am utterly amazed at my experience. I find myself entering the long weekend with certain expectations and goals. And end up learning something different and unexpected. Among my general goals of learning to be a better instructor and coach, I wanted to ride! I planned to be on the bike a lot, and when I wasn’t on a Blade or NXT, I was going to be on a Pilates reformer. I couldn’t wait to feel those endorphins! (I must admit, sometimes it is a nice to be the student rather than the instructor.)
The weekend started off fabulously with Master Instructor, Josh Taylor’s Champion Ride. If you ever have an opportunity to ride with Josh, don’t even think about it, just do it! As is typical, Thursday night there was a line that felt like a mile long waiting to get into the grand ballroom. Good thing I had a ticket!
His ride was inspired by the Triple Crown winner, Secretariat complete with race footage projected onto the two enormous screens that flanked Josh and the stage. Do you know what’s it like to have all of your senses explode at once? There was burning in my legs and lungs, thumping music in my ears, and powerful racing horses before my eyes. The very best part of the ride was the video that was taken from a camera mounted on a jockey’s helmet…at that point you weren’t just watching the horse race, you were the horse racing…The Champion! Josh’s rides consistently bring tears to my eyes. This year was no different.
Friday morning began with some much needed body work and myofascial release. Then it was back on the bike finding my Warrior Within with Master Instructor Natashia Iacovelli.
And finished with a rocking Master Instructor Team Ride:
There were more workshops and more rides: Hold Your Color, MVeâ Circuit Challenge, Real Jumps on a Hill, Cadence Unleashed, Cardio Pilates…. I’m going to admit right here that the Pilates jumpboard class totally kicked my already sore butt. I don’t think I’ve ever sweated that much during pilates!
By the time Sunday rolled around I was TIRED! Luckily Master Instructor, Scott Schlesinger had just what I needed: an endurance ride titled H2O. I was able to flush out my legs, and calm my (often overactive) mind. I can only hope one day to be as talented of a coach that Scott is.
All in all, WSSC 2012 was a great experience and I can’t wait to do it all over again next year!
